New in AXIOM Cyber 5.3: Faster and Better Email Support

The latest version of Magnet AXIOM Cyber, 5.3, is now available!

You can upgrade to AXIOM Cyber 5.3 in-product or over at the Customer Portal

If the investigations that you’re working are email-heavy, this is the update for you! An update that we made to the way we handle EML(X) files will save a considerable amount of time for examiners who are dealing with email—perhaps as part of an eDiscovery investigation or an email-heavy case.

Faster and More Accurate Support for Email

With our updated support of the EML(X) artifact, we noticed both massive time savings and greater accuracy when compared with previous versions of AXIOM Cyber.

Let’s take a step back and level set on EML and what it is. fileinfo.com tells us that “an EML file is an email message saved by an email application, such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail. It contains the content of the message, along with the subject, sender, recipient(s), and date of the message. EML files may also store one or more email attachments, which are files sent with the message.”

Based on our own internal testing of AXIOM Cyber 5.2 vs. AXIOM Cyber 5.3, let’s take a look at a comparison to show the time-savings achieved.

The test image scanned was a whopping 13.5 GB single log file containing:

  • 134,583 EML(X) files
  • 379 email attachments
  • 5,681 people identifiers

In AXIOM Cyber 5.2, when that image was scanned it unfortunately took over 24 hours to get through just half the file. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

In AXIOM Cyber 5.3, when the same image was scanned, it successfully completed in under one hour! 53 minutes and 18 seconds to be exact. HUGE! And in further testing of other files, we noticed the larger the file, the greater the time savings.

Not only did we dramatically improve the speed, we improved the precision of evidence recovery from EML(X) files. Recovery for header, body, and attachment fragments is improved and when getting evidence from unallocated space, email boundaries are now better respected to prevent accidental stitching.
